ATV Quad Kings (DS) Review

Storm City‘s ATV Quad Kings for the Nintendo DS was kind of a surprise. The game was sitting on my desk earlier in the week when I came in and being the ATV fan that I am; I couldn’t help but feel lucky to get this one. Another shock was the Storm City moniker blazoned across the bottom right of the case. I hadn’t heard of them before, which instantly had me worried that I might be in store for a possible letdown. You can’t blame me for being wary as most fans of ATV fans will tell you the DS has been hit or miss with four-wheeler titles in the past. Lucky for me, the new kid on the block has their stuff together as Quad Kings didn’t let me down at all.
The game features three modes of play in World Tour, Arcade and Time Trial. All three start off the same with you choosing which four-wheeler you'll be racing and the color of your vehicle for that event. You can also choose your racer’s number and input your name prior to racing. As far as the modes go, World Tour is basically your career mode here. After you pick your ride, you'll start off on your path to fame. You'll race six different races with each at a new venue. Each racing venue takes place at a different course in a different country. The tracks do vary in their layout; however the courses all feel very similar in terms of how your ride handles the terrain. World Tour has four total divisions in all to complete and will easily be where you spend most of your time at first as you’ll need to unlock courses to play in the other modes.
The Arcade mode offers the quickest fun if you need a quick ATV fix. It’s exactly what it sounds like. You pick a track and race against computer opponents. The benefit here is that the winnings from Arcade combine with your overall winnings towards purchasing better vehicles just like in World Tour. If you feel like you need some practice, that’s where Time Trial comes in. Just like the Arcade mode, you know what you’re getting here. Race around the tracks you’ve become familiar with in career and Arcade to better your times and perfect those power-slides. You’ll have to make sure you’ve unlocked the tracks in World Tour to be able to access them in Time Trial.
